Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, Boston Marathon Suspect #2
BREAKING NEWS: Twenty minutes after tonight’s Boston bombing press conference, a flurry of shots fired were fired in Watertown, Massachusetts.  There are conflicting resorts from sources. Some are saying that the suspect is down. Other are saying that the suspect is cornered and hiding in a boat in the back yard of 67 Franklin Street in Watertown. It is being confirmed that the suspect is alive, but wounded in the boat in the back yard of this property.  It was reported that 20 to 30 shots were fired by police; however, now there is quiet. How ironic, at tonight’s newsconference, the authorities told the public that they were sorry they could not find and arrest the suspect #2 following last nights shoot out.  Then, just 20 minutes later, all that changed. Kudos to a vigilant public.  According to reports, the shed and the boat at this location had been searched earlier, but a woman noticed a door to it had been opened, saw blood and called police. She may have just ended the search for suspect #2 by her actions.
A barrage of gunshots erupted in Watertown, Mass., shortly after 7 p.m. Friday, with preliminary reports indicating that police had finally cornered Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19.
The flurry of activity came less than an hour after Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick ended a Boston-area lockdown early Friday evening after a massive, day-long search of suburban Watertown, which seemingly failed to flush out the teenager.
Shortly after the gunshots, media reports indicated a body had been found in a boat or canoe in a residential backyard. but that had yet to be confirmed by police.
UPDATE I: Suspect #2 is in a standoff with police following the gunfire at 67 Franklin Ave.
UPDATE II: Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, suspect # 2 is surrounded by police. SWAT is about to send a robot in to check whether the suspect is still alive and whether there are any explosive devices.
The second suspect in the Boston Marathon bombing is believed to be “surrounded” after gunfire broke out from a boat or shed behind a house in the Watertown section of Boston.
Sources told Fox News a suspect was “down,” but later said he was alive and surrounded. A neighbor described the sound of as many as 30 shots as akin to “a roll of firecrackers shooting off,” and said blood was found on the door of a shed, or on a trailered boat near it behind a home on Franklin Street.
“All hell broke loose,” the neighbor told a MyFox Boston reporter.
UPDATE III: Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, suspect # 2 is “CAPTURED!!! The hunt is over. The search is done. The terror is over. And justice has won,” the Boston Police Department said on its Twitter account. The public cheers the police

The Boston Marathon bombing suspect was captured wounded but alive Friday night after police found him in a boat in a suburban backyard following a bloody rampage and a daylong manhunt, law enforcement sources said.
The arrest of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19, ended five days of terror from the double bombing at the marathon finish line, which killed three people, wounded 176 and left the city of Boston on edge.
“We got him,” Boston Mayor Tom Menino tweeted.
“CAPTURED!!! The hunt is over. The search is done. The terror is over. And justice has won,” the Boston Police Department said on its Twitter account.
Cops cheered as the suspect was taken into custody in Watertown, Mass. just before 9 p.m., and residents flooded the streets, some chanting, “USA!”

FBI Looking for 12 Strong Islamic/Muslim Sleeper Cell Linked to Boston Bombers, Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev … “We have no doubt the brothers were not acting alone”

From the UK Daily Mirror, the FBI is looking for a 12 strong terrorist “sleeper cell” linked to the Boston marathon bombers, Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. Authorities believe that the two were specially trained to carry out the attacks. Sources close to the investigation said, “We have no doubt the brothers were not acting alone. The devices used to detonate the two bombs were highly sophisticated.” It is true that this terror attack and the events that took place after the bombing of the Boston marathon seemed too sophisticated. When Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev were confronted by police then had a surplus of explosive devises and grenades to launch at authorities. It would have almost seemed like there were more soft targets that they were going to attack. So with all this being known, is it too quick for everyone to give the all clear?

The FBI was last night hunting a 12-strong terrorist “sleeper cell” linked to the Boston marathonbomb brothers.
Police believe Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev were specially trained to carry out the devastatingattack.
More than 1,000 FBI operatives were last night working to track down the cell and arrested a man and two women 60 miles from Boston in the hours before Dzhokhar’s dramatic capture after a bloody shootout on Friday.
A source close to the investigation said: “We have no doubt the brothers were not acting alone. The devices used to detonate the two bombs were highly sophisticated and not the kind of thing people learn from Google.
“They were too advanced. Someone gave the brothers the skills and it is now our job to find out just who they were. Agents think the sleeper cell has up to a dozen members and has been waiting several years for their day to come.”

However, Jihad Watch appropriately asks, how are we supposed to find a sleeper cell when the Obama Administration has now placed off-limits any investigation of the beliefs, motives and goals of jihad terrorists?Atlas Shruggs asks, did the soon to be deported Saudi national, Al-Harbi know these jihadists? We ask, why does it seem like we care more about being “politically correct” than we do stopping terrorism?  How are we supposed to prevent terrorism if we cannot use all resources possible to comprehend the motives and goals of Islamists? Maybe Obama’s next political move will be a “pressure cooker” Seriously, if we are not going to have a president who is serious about terrorism, we will always be reacting to terrorism, never being proactive.
So who wants to still believe that there might not be a “public safety issue” here to have an exception to Miranda here? This terrorist will be provided all of the rights provided under the US Constitution. Then he will be tried under the US Constitution, then he will, God willing we do not have a Casey Anthony “Ship of Fools” jury, be found guilty and sentenced to death.

Chuck Klosterman’s Ethicist Column gets tangles in the Petraeous and Broadwell affair. Posted by Gabriel Lorden

10 Nov
General David Petraeus and Wife  Holly Knowlton – Petraeus

Central Intelligence Agency director General David Petraeus has quit his post because of an extramarital affair, NBC reported yesterday.

According to NBC, Petraeus wrote in his resignation letter that he used “extremely poor judgment” in carrying out the affair while director of the CIA.  His resignation was accepted by the White House on Friday after meeting with President Obama on Thursday night.General Petraeus married Holly Knowlton after graduating West Point.  Holly Knowlton-Petraeus is the daughter of Army General William A. Knowlton who at the time was superintendent of West Point.Accoording to the Huffington Post,  “MSNBC host Andrea Mitchell broke the news Friday afternoon, reading Petraeus’ resignation letter on air.”   The four-star General Petraus had only held the CIA position for a year, after replacing Leon Panetta. Previously, General Petraus had led the United States headed international military force in Afghanistan.

The Washington Post, wrote that “the sudden departure created immediate turmoil in the Obama administration’s national security team just days after Obama won re-election.

NBC published what they said was the full text of Petraeus’ letter online:

HEADQUARTERS Central Intelligence Agency
9 November 2012
Yesterday afternoon, I went to the White House and asked the President to be allowed, for personal reasons, to resign from my position as D/CIA. After being married for over 37 years, I showed extremely poor judgment by engaging in an extramarital affair. Such behavior is unacceptable, both as a husband and as the leader of an organization such as ours. This afternoon, the President graciously accepted my resignation.
As I depart Langley, I want you to know that it has been the greatest of privileges to have served with you, the officers of our Nation’s Silent Service, a work force that is truly exceptional in every regard. Indeed, you did extraordinary work on a host of critical missions during my time as director, and I am deeply grateful to you for that.
Teddy Roosevelt once observed that life’s greatest gift is the opportunity to work hard at work worth doing. I will always treasure my opportunity to have done that with you and I will always regret the circumstances that brought that work with you to an end.
Thank you for your extraordinary service to our country, and best wishes for continued success in the important endeavors that lie ahead for our country and our Agency.
With admiration and appreciation,
David H. Petraeus

General Petraeus and Paula Broadwell

Now Paula Broadwell, the biographer for the resigning CIA Director David Petraeus is under FBI investigation for improperly trying to access General Petraeus’s email and therefore maybe having access to classified information.

General Petraeus mistress Paula Broadwell and her husband.

I ask is this coincidence that General Petraeus is set to testify next week at a closed door session on Capital hill regarding the September attacks against the US consulate in Benghazi following the presidential election?

Chuck Klosterman the New York Times Magazine’s Ethicist

Now the latest Twitter gossip is that the husband of CIA Director David Petraeus’ mistress wrote to Chuck Klosterman, the New York Times Magazine‘s Ethicist, asking whether or not he should expose the affair.

Let’s take a look at the evidence.  Foreign Policy‘s Blake Hounshell linked to this July edition of Klosterman’s Ethicist column on Twitter. “Interesting letter,” was all he had to say.

The second letter in the entry reads:

MY WIFE’S LOVER

My wife is having an affair with a government executive. His role is to manage a project whose progress is seen worldwide as a demonstration of American leadership. (This might seem hyperbolic, but it is not an exaggeration.) I have met with him on several occasions, and he has been gracious. (I doubt if he is aware of my knowledge.) I have watched the affair intensify over the last year, and I have also benefited from his generosity. He is engaged in work that I am passionate about and is absolutely the right person for the job. I strongly feel that exposing the affair will create a major distraction that would adversely impact the success of an important effort. My issue: Should I acknowledge this affair and finally force closure? Should I suffer in silence for the next year or two for a project I feel must succeed? Should I be “true to my heart” and walk away from the entire miserable situation and put the episode behind me? NAME WITHHELD

The scary part about the letter is how well everything fits the timeline we know about Petraeus’ affair.   Following the affair conspiracy theory logic, the letter writer would be Scott Broadwell. It’s been confirmed that Petraeus’ mistress was Paula Broadwell, Petraeus’ biographer and Scott’s wife. The affair began in August 2011 and ended “months ago,” but it’s unclear when exactly. Either way, it fits the supposed timeline of the letter writer’s dilemma and there’s no arguing Petraeus was a “government executive” who’s “seen worldwide as a demonstration of American leadership.” He’s the director of the freakin’ CIA.

Moving on…

Klosterman’s response, to his credit, was wise and heartfelt and maybe even prescient:

This is between you and your spouse. You should tell her you want to separate, just as you would if she were sleeping with the mailman. The idea of “suffering in silence” for the good of the project is illogical. How would the quiet divorce of this man’s mistress hurt an international leadership initiative? He’d probably be relieved.

[…]

Do you admire this man so much that you haven’t asked your wife why she keeps having sex with him? I halfway suspect you’re writing this letter because you want specific people to read this column and deduce who is involved and what’s really going on behind closed doors (without actually addressing the conflict in person). That’s not ethical, either.

Klosterman in my opinion nailed the weight of an affair perfectly. It’s something that shouldn’t be exposed first in public, no matter who the participants are. And, assuming it is Broadwell, saw through the letter for what it was: a plea for his own marriage.

Assuming the letter was written by Scott Broadwell, Klosterman would have had to put everything together and traced it all back to Petraeus using the kind of string-on-cork board mystery solving you see crazy people use in bad movies.  In comparison, the FBI weren’t tipped off to the affair until she tried to access his personal Gmail account.

Slate has reached out to (the notoriously hard to get ahold of) Klosterman for comment regarding his possible scooping of a major national security story, in an advice column of all places. There’s also been speculation over whether or not the Times’ newly controversial public editor Margaret Sullivan will weigh in on this. The job of the public editor is to hold the paper accountable to its’ own ethical standards.

Is it not sad that the Director of the CIA can’t even keep the story of his affair quiet?

General David Petraeous, welcome to The Cheater Club.

-Sincerely Bill Clinton, John Edwards, Mark Sanford, John Ensign, Newt Gingrich, Eliot Spitzer etc

Paula Broadwell, welcome to The Mistress Club.
-Sincerely Ashley Dupre, Maria Belen Chapur, Monica Lewinsky, Rielle Hunter etc.

What happen to the “American Dream” – Gabriel Lorden of Philadelphia, PA.

20 Oct
The foundation of this country is its strong middle class workforce who once believed that anyone could obtain their “American Dream”.  However, the dream of owning a nice house surrounded by a white picket fence, sending your kids to college, and having Social Security benefits at retirement resembles just that, a dream for a lot of Americans.
The most important issue in this year’s election seems to be the economy but this topic has now unfortunately been “politicized,” meaning that you can’t talk about it (or blog about it) without either being applauded or hissed by fans of each political team.
The Amercian Dream - Gabriel Lorden of Philadelphia, Pa

The Amercian Dream – Gabriel Lorden of Philadelphia, Pa

The sad truth is that fixing that economy is going to take decades, regardless of who’s in power.

But we have to fix it or we’re going to become a nation of a few million aristocrats and 300 million slaves.
To start to fix the economy we first have to understand what’s wrong with economy and how did we get there.
First, its not regulations or uncertainty or taxes that are crippling businesses and therefore crippling our economy.  This is apparent by the recent all-time S&P 500 profits. What is wrong is that the amazing profits of American businesses aren’t flowing through to most Americans except those at the very top.  This is evident because the percentage of Americans with jobs is at the lowest level in three decades and wages as a percentage of the economy have hit an all-time low.

Second, debt is a huge problem.  Total debt across our economy has skyrocketed in the past 30 years and not just in absolute dollars.  Our debt has soared from less than 100% to GDP 30 years ago to more than 350% of GDP. To be clear, debt doesn’t just mean the federal government debt; it’s everyone.  The growth of borrowing has shapely outpaced economic growth for corporations, state and local government, and households.

The next big problem is our growing inequality. The top 1% of the country is getting ever-richer, while everyone else treads water or loses ground which started in the early 1980s. The inequality was caused by two big reasons. First, “globalization” opened up a vast new labor pool; 3 billion people who were willing to work for a lot less than Americans.  Second, the decline of labor unions, put pressure on wages with average hourly earnings (adjusting for inflation) which haven’t changed much in 50 years.  Meanwhile, taxes have been cut sharply for investors, owners, and high wage earners which to an explosion in the pay of CEOs and other senior execs and investors relative to average workers.

The problem with inequality, by the way, is not just the sense of unfairness. It also hurts the economy because “the 90%” spend a lot more than “the 10%,” and the 90% is hurting.

Lastly for the past 30 years, we’ve subdued our growing inequality with increasing government spending on social programs such as Social Security, Medicare/Medicaid, unemployment and so forth.  Not to mention we got ourselves in an unnecessary war looking for imaginary WMD but lets that topic for another blog in the future.
So what’s the answer; how do we make the “American Dream” a reality again?
First, we all need sustained discipline and a smart long-term financial plan.  Specifically, consumers need to spend less, save more and pay off their debt.
Second, companies need to stop being so obsessed with “profits” and start sharing more of their immense wealth with their employees.
And then, lastly, of course, we have to implement a plan to eventually get our massive government deficit under control. We don’t want to do this immediately, in one fell swoop, because lots of Americans and the economy have become highly dependent on that government spending. It took us 30 years to get into this mess; it will probably take us 30 years to get out.

Heroin overdose killed Garrett Reid – Gabriel Lorden

18 Oct

On August 5th an accidental heroin overdose killed Garrett Reid, the son of Philadelphia Eagles Coach Andy Reid, officials said Thursday.

Northampton (Pa.) County coroner Zachary Lysek listed the cause of death as “acute opiate (heroin) toxicity” after tests confirmed the presence of heroin in Garrett Reid’s body.  Investigators revealed they found a used syringe and spoon in his room, along with a gym bag filled with dozens of syringes and needles, many of them unopened.  “We are confident today that Mr. Reid’s death was the result of a self-injected lethal dose of heroin,” District Attorney John Morganelli said at a news conference in Easton.

Reid, 29, was discovered in a dorm room at the Eagles’ training camp at Lehigh University in Easton, PA where he was working for the team as a strength and conditioning coach. He had a history of drug problems but appeared to be turning his life around.  The police chief at Lehigh University, Edward Shupp, said a 911 call was made at 7:20 a.m., and that Garrett Reid was deceased upon a policeman’s arrival at the campus dormitory. Police said there was no evidence of foul play but there might be future arrest as the findings of test results came 10 weeks after Reid’s passing.

Investigators found 47 syringes and 65 needles in the younger Reid’s gym bag, many of them unopened, and 19 vials of an unknown liquid, Morganelli said. He added that those substances were unrelated to Reid’s death.

Morganelli said the investigation has turned to where and from whom Garrett Reid got the narcotics and drug paraphernalia.

Reid was a recovering drug addict who had seemingly turned his life around. His father, Andy Reid, had indicated that his 29-year-old son may have had a relapse.  In January 2007, both Reid boys were arrested on the same day following separate incidents. Britt brandished a gun and got into a verbal altercation with another motorist, while Garrett ran a red light and smashed into another vehicle. Drugs were found in Britt’s car and Garrett admitted to authorities after his arrest that he had used heroin prior to getting behind the wheel. Britt and Garrett Reid served jail time.

Andy Reid took a month-long leave of absence that year to deal with his sons’ legal and personal woes.

In a statement released through the Eagles, the Reid family said Garrett Reid’s smile, laugh and energy would be missed.

“These results sadly confirmed what we had expected all along,” the family’s statement said. “We understood that Garrett’s longstanding battle with addiction was going to be difficult. He will, however, always have our family’s love and respect for the courage he showed in trying to overcome it. In the end, we take comfort in our faith and know that he’s in a better place.”

Former Pennsylvania Senator Arlen Specter died on Sunday from complications of non-Hodgkins Lymphoma, according to the AP.

He was 82.

A longtime moderate Republican, Specter made headlines in 2009 when he announced that he was switching to the Democratic Party. He left office in 2011 after being defeated in the Democratic primary.

In 2005, Specter announced that he was being treated for non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. He recovered, but the illness resurfaced in 2008 and again in 2012. He was hospitalized in August.

The AP’s full obituary is below.

HARRISBURG, Pa. — Former U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter, the outspoken Pennsylvania centrist whose switch from Republican to Democrat ended a 30-year career in which he played a pivotal role in several Supreme Court nominations, died Sunday. He was 82.Specter, who announced in late August that he was battling cancer, died at his home in Philadelphia from complications of non-Hodgkins lymphoma, said his son Shanin. Over the years, Arlen Specter had fought two previous bouts with Hodgkin’s disease, overcome a brain tumor and survived cardiac arrest following bypass surgery.

Specter rose to prominence in the 1960s as an aggressive Philadelphia prosecutor and as an assistant counsel to the Warren Commission, developing the single-bullet theory that posited just one bullet struck both President Kennedy and Texas Gov. John Connally – an assumption critical to the argument that presidential assassin Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone. The theory remains controversial and was the focus of Oliver Stone’s 1991 movie “JFK.”

In 1987, Specter helped thwart the Supreme Court nomination of former federal appeals Judge Robert H. Bork – earning him conservative enemies who still bitterly refer to such rejections as being “borked.”

But four years later, Specter was criticized by liberals for his tough questioning of Anita Hill at Clarence Thomas’ Supreme Court nomination hearings and for accusing her of committing “flat-out perjury.” The nationally televised interrogation incensed women’s groups and nearly cost him his seat in 1992.

Specter, who had battled cancer, was Pennsylvania’s longest-serving senator when Democrats picked then-U.S. Rep. Joe Sestak over him in the 2010 primary, despite Specter’s endorsements by President Barack Obama and other Democratic leaders. Sestak lost Specter’s seat to conservative Republican Rep. Pat Toomey by 2 percentage points.

A political moderate, Specter was swept into the Senate in the Reagan landslide of 1980.

He took credit for helping to defeat President Clinton’s national health care plan – the complexities of which he highlighted in a gigantic chart that hung on his office wall for years afterward – and helped lead the investigation into Gulf War syndrome. Following the Iran-Contra scandal, he pushed legislation that created the inspectors general of the CIA.

As a senior member of the powerful Appropriations Committee, Specter pushed for increased funding for stem-cell research, breast cancer and Alzheimer’s disease, and supported several labor-backed initiatives in a GOP-led Congress. He also doggedly sought federal funds for local projects in his home state.

The former Democrat was not shy about bucking fellow Republicans.

In 1995, he launched a presidential bid, denouncing religious conservatives as the “fringe” that plays too large a role in setting the party’s agenda. Specter, who was Jewish, bowed out before the first primary because of lackluster fundraising.

Despite his tireless campaigning, Specter’s irascible independence caught up with him in 2004. Specter barely survived a GOP primary challenge by Toomey by 17,000 votes of more than 1.4 million cast. He went on to easily win the general election with the help of organized labor, a traditionally Democratic constituency.

Specter startled fellow senators in April 2009 when he announced he was switching to the Democratic side, saying he found himself “increasingly at odds with the Republican philosophy.” Earlier in the year, he had been one of only three Republicans in Congress – and the only one facing re-election in 2010 – who voted for President Barack Obama’s economic stimulus bill.

He also said he had concluded that his chance of defeating a GOP challenger in the 2010 party primary was bleak. But he said the Democrats couldn’t count on him to be “an automatic 60th vote” to give the party a filibuster-proof majority.

Specter outspent Sestak, a retired Navy vice admiral, but Sestak attacked him as a political opportunist who switched parties to save his job. A memorable campaign ad used Specter’s own words against him: “My change in party will enable me to be re-elected.”

Specter was diagnosed in February 2005 with stage IV Hodgkin’s disease, a cancer of the lymphatic system. Announcing the diagnosis with his trademark doggedness, Specter said: “I have beaten a brain tumor, bypass heart surgery and many tough political opponents and I’m going to beat this, too.”

He wrote of his struggle in a 2008 book, “Never Give In: Battling Cancer in the Senate,” saying he wanted to let others facing similar crises “ought to know they are not alone.”

Cancer handed him “a stark look at mortality” and an “added sense of humility,” Specter told The Associated Press.

Intellectual and stubborn, Specter played squash nearly every day into his mid-70s and liked to unwind with a martini or two at night. He took the lead on a wide spectrum of issues and was no stranger to controversy.

Born in Wichita, Kan., on Feb. 12, 1930, Specter spent summers toiling in his father’s junkyard in Russell, Kan., where he knew another future senator – Bob Dole. The junkyard thrived during World War II, allowing Specter’s father to send his four children to college.

Specter left Kansas for college in 1947 because the University of Kansas, where his best friends were headed, did not have Jewish fraternities. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1951 and Yale law school in 1956. He served in the Air Force from 1951 to 1953.

Friends say his childhood circumstances made him determined, tough and independent-minded. Specter considered his father’s triumphs the embodiment of the American dream, a fulfillment that friends say drove him to a career in public life.

He entered politics as a Democrat in Philadelphia in the early 1960s, when he was an assistant district attorney who sent six Teamsters officials to jail for union corruption.

After working on the Warren Commission, he returned to Philadelphia and challenged his boss, James Crumlish, for district attorney in 1965. Specter ran as a Republican and was derided by Crumlish as “Benedict Arlen.” But Crumlish lost to his protege by 36,000 votes.

It was to be the last time until 1980 that Specter would win an election to higher office, despite three attempts – a 1967 bid for Philadelphia mayor, a 1976 loss to John Heinz for Senate and a 1978 defeat by Dick Thornburgh for governor.

Specter lost re-election as district attorney in 1973 and went into private practice. Among his most notorious clients as a private attorney was Ira Einhorn, a Philadelphia counterculture celebrity who killed his girlfriend in 1977.

Finally, in 1980, Specter won the Senate seat vacated by retiring Republican Richard Schweiker, defeating former Pittsburgh Mayor Pete Flaherty.

After leaving the Senate in January 2011, the University of Pennsylvania Law School announced Specter would teach a course about Congress’ relationship with the Supreme Court, and Maryland Public Television launched a political-affairs show hosted by the former senator.

A funeral was scheduled for Tuesday in Penn Valley, Pa., and will be open to the public, followed by burial in Huntingdon Valley, Pa.

He is survived by his wife, Joan, and two sons, Shanin and Steve, and four granddaughters.

Associated Press writers Ron Todt in Philadelphia and Lara Jakes contributed to this report.

The Walking Dead: Andrew Lincoln and Sarah Wayne Callies on what to expect in Season 3 – Gabriel Lorden, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

14 Oct

The rocky marriage of Rick, left (Andrew Lincoln), and Lori (Sarah Wayne Callies), and their journey to find their way back to one another is a central focus in Season 3 of The Walking Dead.

LOS ANGELES — In the first five minutes of the third-season premiere of “The Walking Dead,” former sheriff’s deputy Rick Grimes and his battered and beaten band of zombie apocalypse survivors remain completely speechless. It’s a hauntingly stark opening for the popular AMC undead drama that no one’s been quiet about since it first debuted.

“We meet them after eight months,” said Andrew Lincoln, the actor who portrays Rick, sitting alongside Sarah Wayne Callies, who plays Rick’s feisty wife, Lori. “There’s a huge rift between Rick and Lori. They’re desperate. They’re more desperate than they’ve ever been, so much so that in the teaser, no one says a word, and everything is kind of sad.”

Everything hasn’t been sad for the cast and crew of “The Walking Dead,” which has risen from surprising cult hit to unstoppable zombie brand. “The Walking Dead,” which is based on the comic book series written by Robert Kirkman, has transformed into a full-fledged franchise featuring a horde of video games, costumes, toys, books and theme park attractions.

With just a pair of eight-episode seasons, “The Walking Dead” series amassed a huge following, becoming must-scream-TV on Sunday nights. The show’s second-season finale, which featured the survivors fleeing a farm after being barraged by waves of zombies, corralled 9 million viewers — a basic-cable record among younger audiences.

The success is often lost on the cast, who shoot on location in rural Georgia, away from the ego-enhancing realm of Hollywood. They’re reminded of the popularity when confronted by thousands of fans at San Diego’s Comic-Con or motivated by the “gasoline” that is fan letters and photos posted inside a makeshift shrine erected in the trailer of actor Norman Reedus (Daryl).

Merle (Michael Rooker) will return in The Walking Dead Season 3.

“It’s a solid pocket we stay in,” said Steven Yeun, who plays nimble Glenn. “I got a glimpse of it today when I was sitting in the hotel room. I looked out from the balcony, and I’m like, ‘Where am I?!’ We just came from shooting a terrible, gnarly scene in the middle of the woods — just yelling and guttural stuff — and now all of a sudden I’m at the Four Seasons.”

The third season, which premieres Sunday at 8 p.m. CST, finds the survivors coming across the too-good-to-be-true town of Woodbury, a zombie-free enclave that’s led by a cutthroat character dubbed the Governor. British actor David Morrissey, who was cast as the iconic villain from the comics earlier this year, is downplaying the Governor’s “MUHAHAHA!” ruthlessness.

Andrew Lincoln in Season 3 of The Walking Dead.

“I think, creatively, you’d hit a ceiling very quickly if you did that in the TV show,” said Morrissey. “You have to give him complexity. You have to give him a sense of motivation and why he’s doing these things.”

The new season will also feature katana-wielding fan-favorite Michonne, who saved straggler Andrea at the end of last season with her chained-up zombie sidekicks in tow. Michonne actress Danai Gurira said the character’s interpersonal relationships with the other survivors will send her on “a bit of a different journey” than the Michonne of the comics.

However, the action in this season’s first two episodes is focused squarely on the prison glimpsed at the end of last season after Rick and son Carl took down a zombified version of Rick’s best friend, Shane, who continually clashed with his buddy about how to exist in a world where “walkers” — the show’s preferred term for zombies — seem to lurk around every corner.

After making it through the winter, the survivors attempt to transform the well-secured prison into their new homestead. Callies, whose Lori is further along in her pregnancy this season, said the addition of Woodbury and the prison adds a new dimension to the storytelling, especially now that the characters are accustom to taking down walkers.

“There’s a sense of what it would’ve been like if Shane had run the show from the beginning,” said Callies. “It’s two mature visions of what this world can look like now: one with Rick’s group; one with the Governor’s group. They stand in stark contrast to one another, and you get a real clear sense of what each leader’s decisions have cost their people.”

Kirkman, who serves as an executive producer on the show, promised the third season, which will be split in half, will feature some surprises that even the most die-hard “Walking Dead” fans won’t see coming. (The series has continually veered from the source material, whether it’s drawing out story lines or killing off characters earlier than in the comics.)

Walking Dead – Season 3

“We challenge each other,” said show runner Glen Mazzara. “We ask each other questions. If something feels too big, not plausible or like a jump-the-shark moment, we have to figure out how to do it.”

“The Walking Dead” masterminds are also pushing their realistic take on the zombie apocalypse into other avenues: an episodic game from Telltale Games based on the comic; a first-person shooter game due from Activision focusing on Daryl, who doesn’t appear in the comics; and mazes at Universal Studios’ Halloween Horror Nights in California and Florida.

How much “Walking Dead” is too much?

“I turned down the perfume,” joked Kirkman, who authored two Woodbury-centric “Walking Dead” novels. “I look at it like, ‘If it’s cool, that’s fine.’”

Well growing up in an academic household with two university professor parents, it’s little wonder that Sarah Wayne Callies has applied her considerable intellect to the question: how have zombies become so firmly entrenched in the zeitgeist?

As Lori Grimes, wife of Sheriff Rick Grimes — head of a band of beleaguered survivors of a zombie apocalypse in the AMC series The Walking Dead — it’s a subject that has come up frequently during the series’ first two seasons, with Season 3 set to debut on Sunday at 9 p.m.

“Sure, I’ve got theories. It’s possible, that in an increasingly secular society, we have an anxiety about what happens to us after we die and increasingly, there are a lot of people who don’t really buy into the answers that traditionally churches and religions give us. That’s a possibility,” Callies mused during a recent telephone interview.

“It’s possible that we’re scared about global climate change and we have a sense that we have literally consumed ourselves,” Callies pondered further.

“I guess maybe the nice thing about zombies — if there is a nice thing about zombies — is that you can tack on to them whatever your neurosis du jour happens to be,” she said.

“What is interesting is that a lot of people say they (zombies) don’t represent anything, they’re just cool. I wonder if there isn’t a part of us — as writers and artists — that want to make more of it than it is,” added Callies, an Illinois native who has lived in B.C. for the past seven years.

Callies was working on a film in a remote part of Nigeria when she first heard about the part of Lori, a wife and mother whose relationship with her husband is, to say the least, troubled.

“I said, ‘I don’t have electricity and there are roaches on my floor, there’s no way for me to take this audition.’ And they said, ‘Okay, that’s too bad, it’s a great opportunity,” Callies recalled.

“It was a month and a half later probably that I finally made it back to the U.S. and the project was still alive — or the project was still dead, depending on how you best describe a zombie show — and they were still casting,” Callies said.

The series has become a big hit with critics and audiences. Its Season 2 finale drew 9 million viewers, making it the highest rated drama in basic cable history and a major winner for network AMC.

“There is a demographic of people who really seem to respect that we’re trying to tell an honest story, not a pretty story. I think in that sense, we trust our audience, we trust them a lot,” Callies said.

“We believe that (they’re) intelligent people who want to be told a very complicated story about a very dark subject. And by a dark subject, I mean even before you get into the zombies. . .being a parent, being a spouse, trying to keep the family together. Those are dark subjects,” she added.

Callies recalled her first meeting with show creator Frank Darabont, a three-time Oscar nominee and director of such hit movies as The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile, to talk about the character of Lori.

“I said I’m interested in playing the darker side of what it means to be a wife and mother. And he just started laughing and he said, ‘Well, you’ve come to the right place,’ ” Callies said.

Callies also offered a few tantalizing hints about Season 3, saying the group led by her husband, Rick, meets another group who’ve survived similar horrors.

“You get a sense of the cost of Rick’s leadership and it stirs the pot pretty significantly,” Callies said.

“Personally, between Rick and Lori, their marriage is ‘quelle catastrophe!’ It’s a big, big, big mess, so our journey is a journey of desperately trying to get back to one another through a huge chasm of grief and loss and guilt. These are two people who are so mired in self-hatred that they can’t begin to conceive of the other person forgiving them. That’s the broad strokes of Season 3.”

Walmart Black Friday Strike: Workers Threaten To ‘Take Action’ On Retailer’s Busiest Day – Posted by Gabriel Lorden

13 Oct

Employees at 28 Walmarts in 12 different cities walked out of work Tuesday, but things may get a whole lot worse for the biggest retailer in the U.S. come Black Friday.

United Food and Commercial Workers’ Making Change At Walmart, the group behind the protesters alleging unfair labor practices by Walmart, has warned that the campaign will come to a head on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving that’s regarded as one of the biggest shopping days of the year, according to a conference call organized by the group Wednesday.

“We feel like if they refuse to listen to our proposition we will make sure that on Black Friday we will take action inside and outside of stores,” said Colby Harris, 22, a Walmart worker from Dallas, Texas, and a member of OUR Walmart, a UFCW-backed worker organization closely affiliated with Making Change at Walmart. “We’ll make it known that Walmart’s deadline is Black Friday,” he added.

The Black Friday protests could include any “non-violent action, from flash mobs to strikes to public awareness,” Harris added.

David Tovar, Walmart VP of communications, countered the protesters’ claims in an interview with The Huffington Post. “These strikes are an attempt by the unions to further their own political and financial agendas,” he said, noting that the majority of Walmart’s 1.4 million workers are pleased with their jobs. Tovar wouldn’t comment on the possibility of Black Friday strikes.

“More than half of Walmart’s one million hourly store associates have an hourly wage at least $10.00 or higher,” he said. “In fact, in many metropolitan areas in which we operate, our entry level start rates regularly exceeds that of new hires for comparable positions under the UFCW contracts.”

Tovar also said that three quarters of Walmart’s store management teams started out in hourly positions, noting that the company promoted 160,000 hourly workers last year.

If the protesters go through with the Black Friday strike, the move would be unprecedented and could cause a major headache for the retailer on a day when consumers traditionally wait in long lines outside stores for the best deals. But the activists have proven they’re not afraid to break barriers. Before last Friday, no retail Walmart workers had ever gone on strike, United Food and Commercial Workers’ Making Change At Walmart told The Huffington Post.

Still, this is far from the first time Walmart workers have butted heads with their employer. Current and former female Walmart workers filed one of the largest class action lawsuits in history earlier this year, accusing the retail giant of discriminating against women based on gender. The case was ultimately struck down by the Supreme Court. Echoes of that lawsuit persist, as the National Organization of Women has pledged to join the protests on Black Friday, the organization’s president Terry O’Neill confirmed during Wednesday’s conference call.

Also speaking on the call were Sally Greenberg, executive director of the National Consumers League, Pastor Edwin Jones of the Living Faith Baptist Church and International Ministries in Washington, D.C., and Hector Sanchez, executive director of Labor Council for Latin American Advancement. All three speakers reiterated their members’ support for a Black Friday action to protest Walmart.

More recently, Walmart warehouse workers in Southern California marched 50 miles over six days to protest working conditions.

Still, if Walmart were to close on Black Friday, it may help the retailer avoid some dangerous situations. The discounts traditionally offered on the day have a history of inciting violence among shoppers. One woman was arrested last year after pepper-spraying 20 other customers waiting to purchase discounted Xbox video game consoles in order to “get an advantage.”

Cleveland Bus Driver Uppercut: Man Punches Woman After Heated Argument – Gabriel Lorden

13 Oct

A Cleveland, Ohio, bus driver dealt quite the blow to a woman who apparently had been taunting him during a ride, delivering an uppercut punch directly to her jaw.

The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (RTA) is currently investigating the fight between a male bus driver and a female passenger after a video of the driver throwing an uppercut and tossing the woman off his bus, Fox 8 Cleveland reports.

The video, recorded by a fellow passenger, was posted on WorldStarHipHop.com and YouTube and began going viral on Reddit before it gained national attention.

SCROLL FOR VIDEO (WARNING: GRAPHIC CONTENT, LANGUAGE)

It is unclear what the two first began fighting over, but the female can be heard threatening to fight the driver. The driver then says he will get his daughter and granddaughter to come down and deal with the 25-year-old woman, who then tells him to bring along his “mammy,” the International Business Times notes.

The woman approaches the bus driver, and the driver rises from his seat and hits the young woman before throwing her off the bus.

“She wants to be a man, I’m going to treat you like a man,” the driver announces to the screaming crowd.

RTA officials are unsure when the uppercut incident occurred, but they believe it happened on Sept. 18, according to The Smoking Gun.

WKYC obtained a full statement from the RTA. It reads:

RTA saw the video posted on YouTube of the operator incident on October 11. Through the investigation, we believe the incident occurred on Sept. 18. Upon identifying the driver, he was immediately suspended and removed from duty. His behavior is absolutely unacceptable. RTA apologizes to our customers for this incident. A full investigation continues.

“We also saw the video today. Upon review, the driver was removed from duty and suspended. We are investigating,” RTA representative Mary Shaffer told The Cleveland Leader.

UPDATE: 3:56 p.m. — The original YouTube video (seen below) showing a physical altercation between a bus driver and a female passenger aboard a Cleveland bus describes the female as a “teen girl.” However, new information from Fox 19 and other stations reveals that the woman who was punched by the driver, a 22-year veteran of the RTA, is actually 25 years old.

(References to the woman’s age have been updated throughout the article.)
